Electricity gets more out of gas

Send gasoline or diesel fuel through a strong electric field just before it goes into a fuel injector and you can boost a vehicle's fuel efficiency by about 20 percent. [more]

Cheaper white LEDs on deck

The main hurdle to replacing incandescent lights with much more efficient light-emitting diodes is lowering the cost. Researchers have been looking to silicon for a solution. [more]

Argonne device tracks plug-in hybrid performance

Argonne National Laboratory has developed a diagnostic device that monitors plug-in hybrid electric vehicle performance. The device uses GPS and a network of sensors to collect real-time data on where and how far a vehicle travels, how the engine and battery perform, how efficiently the fuel is used and to calculate watt-hours per mile.

LAB NOTE

Demo car hits 100 mpg

Carmakers ought to be able to sell 100-miles-per-gallon cars. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has demonstrated the point with a modified Toyota Prius. The researchers converted a stock 2006 Prius into a plug-in hybrid and added a larger lithium-ion battery and a rooftop solar panel to more than double the car's gas mileage.
