Scientists call for sustainable
biofuels policies
Biofuels are coming. The question is
will we produce them in a way that wisely balances environmental,
economic and social factors.
Twenty-three scientists from universities, institutes and
the US Department of Agriculture have issued
a call for science-based policies to steer biofuels research and
production toward productive and sustainable practices.
They're calling for looking at the whole system when assessing
energy yields and environmental impacts, accounting for ecosystems
in land management practices, and understanding the effects of policies
and practices at different scales from the farm to the planet.
Policies that assure sustainable biofuels production aren't
yet in place, according to the scientists, and "business as usual
with larger is not an environmentally welcome outcome."
