Ultracapacitors win X Prize
video contest
The X Prize Foundation announced
the winners of its $25,000 "What's Your Crazy Green Idea?" YouTube
video
competition.
University of California, Irvine undergraduates Kyle Good
and Brian Le won for their video "Ultimate Capacitor". The 2-minute
video proposes an X Prize competition for developing ultracapacitors,
which store large amounts of electricity and charge and discharge
much faster than batteries. Ultracapacitors could power electric vehicles
and store electricity generated by intermittent renewable sources
like wind turbines and solar panels.
X Prize competitions are designed to spur innovation in science
and engineering. Current X Prizes include $10 million to produce a
car that gets more than 100 miles per gallon and $30 million to land
a robot on the moon.
