DOE slots $110m for biofuels
research
The Department of Energy today announced
$110 million in Recovery Act funding for advanced biofuels research.
The funding includes $50 million to create a research consortium
to develop biofuels from algae, $35 million to create a research consortium
to develop biofuels that are compatible with existing fuel infrastructure,
and $25 million to increase funding for three existing Bioenergy Research
Centers.
The research funding is part of a $786.5 million biofuels
package that includes $480 million for pilot- and demonstration-scale
integrated biorefineries. The refineries will produce fuels, chemicals
and other products, and heat and power from biomass feedstock. The
package also includes $176.5 million for existing biorefineries projects,
and $20 million for research to optimize vehicles for ethanol.
