DOE rolls out third stimulus
installment for science
The US Department of Energy announced
that $327 million has been allocated for scientific research. The
money is the third and final installment of the $1.6 billion of Recovery
Act funding awarded to the DOE's Office of Science.
About two thirds of the money will go to DOE National Laboratories
and the remaining third will go to universities, nonprofits and companies.
Most of the money going to national laboratories is already allocated
to specific projects.
Highlights of the projects most directly related to energy
include $20.9 million for fusion research at five of the laboratories,
$9.4 million for bioenergy research at two of the laboratories, and
$2.4 million for mathematical analysis related to the smart grid at
three of the laboratories.
